Animation engine

Granny 3D is the animation engine that is used in World War II Online developed by RAD Game Tools. There is a planned upgrade of the engine relatively soon.

Unity 3D

This graphics engine was developed by Cornered Rat Software in 1999 for specific use in World War II Online. The game models a 6000 meter visual range, compared to a more standard 500 meter range typical in other games. Jaeger was once currently working on it to improve its render path. However, because Unity II was close to completion, Jaeger switched focus to the new engine instead of revamping the old one.

Over the several years of development, there have also been many graphical improvements added to the game. These include:
Waving flags
Bump mapping and improved multi-layer multi-texture
Rendered foliage
Hit, fire and smoke effects

Unity II

This new engine is set to replace Unity 3D. It is planned that it will provide a vast performance improvement as well as new technology for the game. It will also allow for higher poly models and higher resolution textures that are to be rendered at better performance with compatibility for the latest graphics features. It is being worked on by Jaeger and RickB. It is currently close to beta. According to CRS, RickB has been logging into the live server, loading the gameworld up with an in-progress build of Unity 2.

1.28 has what is considered Unity 1.5. It holds parts of Unity 2 that aids in rendering. Go to performance increases to see more detail. The first implementation of Unity II will only be a improved render engine that will greatly reduce the difficulty of implementing next gen graphics.

Physics engine

World War II Online’s physics engine calculates ordnance and weapon performance, collision, movement across the terrain, detailed damage models etc.

See Ballistics for a more in depth look.
