Issue with the template - Whenever I try to edit a part of it, I end up editing the template.

That's right. It's all in the template, really. You can see it better on this page Squads#How_To_Add_Your_Squad_To_The_Wiki. The areas in <angle brackets> are where you enter content (though you remove the brackets). Bloo 01:58, 25 December 2006 (CST)
You probably did 
{{Subst:Squad}}
instead of 
{{Subst:SquadStart}}
on the first save. The latter seeds the proper template data in place, and should be what's mentioned on Category:Squad. --Krenn 18:55, 27 December 2006 (CST)
