Wiki Development Strategy
Krenn's way ahead of me. Instead of reading the below, go here:
How_Things_Work_Around_Here
I thought I'd pust some thoughts and notes here to talk about how we should all approach the wiki.
First, there is all kinds of information on MediaWiki (the technology that runs this and Wikipedia) at http://www.mediawiki.org/.
Second, I am no expert on wiki code by any stretch. But it is pretty clear that you don't need to be to contribute to one.
Third, because wikis encourage people to update/edit/revise/proofread/expand on the content created by others, it is best if you aren't too concerned about 'your' text. As a general rule, you should feel free to make changes - but you should think them through. This will be important in overal organization of the wiki, as well as sections/topics/categories within it. Each page has a discussion tab at the top. I think it is best used to discuss the page in question there (rather than the specific issue like FB captures and how they ought to change, etc. - that would be best for the forums). But rather, let's try to use the Discussion pages to talk about how pages and topics should be best arranged.
Having said that, at this point, it is probably best if you refrain from deleting others content without discussing it with them first. We can 'roll back' pages, but I'd rather avoid that for now. But expanding on topics, making spelling and grammar corrections, stuff like that, you should not hesitate if you are motivated to do so.
Password changes and Email validation the mail thing isn't working, Krenn thinks it is a sendmail issue on this server (I think password changes get confirmed in email). I'm sure we'll get that straightened out eventually.
Give some thought when creating pages.
- Pages, once created, are never really deleted.
- Pages should have good names that make sense, as these will be in the URL for that page.
- Use the Special Pages, particularly
- Wanted Pages
- Orphaned Pages (What should link to this?)
- Old Pages (Are these still accurate?)
- Dead-end pages (Should this link to anything else?)
- Short Pages (Do these need expanding?)
- Long Pages (Do these need revising or should they be subdivided?)
