	The Sherman Firefly was a tank used by the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth and Allied armoured formations in the Second World War. 			With the better gun, the Sherman M4A3(76) is a very good medium tank. The high silhouette does pose a big target; conversely it improves visibility on the battlefield for the commander and it is much easier to find a hull-down position and still fire over the protection of a berm.

			Expect that you will be outranged in gun duels against 88 mm armed Tiger tanks should you stumble across one of those monsters. Work in teams and use cover to keep encounter ranges shorter where possible, as your gun will definitely hurt Tigers out to around 1 km, and is very deadly at 500 m.

			For a medium tank, it is fast and manoeuvrable with good turret speed to give you a bit more of an advantage in short to medium range engagements.

			Get closer when possible to exploit the excellent performance of the M79 ammo, which does not have the advantages of an HE filler (it is solid shot).

			Originally designed as an exploitation tank, the Sherman in its original guise had a 75 mm gun with excellent HE rounds. Unfortunately, due to the odd US doctrine that declared that enemy tanks were to be fought only with tank destroyers, little attention was paid to the Sherman’s AT capability, which was not fantastic due to a low velocity AP round.

	~~This M4A3 version of~~ the ~~Medium Tank M4 series carried~~ the ~~new high-velocity 76 mm M1 Gun into battle against~~ German tanks~~, which were generally too heavily armored for the low-velocity 75 mm M3 Gun issued~~ with ~~the original Sherman tank. The M4A3 retained the barely adequate armor of the original Sherman but its higher velocity gun performed very much better against German armor than the 75 mm ever could.~~		To counter the huge threat that this presented the Allies with when encountering German tanks with excellent penetration performance and armour, a crash program to refit the Sherman with the far superior 76.2 mmMIA2 AT gun was undertaken almost immediately.

	~~Although larger in caliber~~, ~~the 76 mm M1 threw~~ a ~~slightly weaker HE shell than~~ the ~~Sherman's original 75 mm gun.~~

	~~Note that the M4A3 is not the same as the British Firefly, which was a~~ Sherman with ~~a QF 17 Pdr anti-tank gun. The 17 Pdr was nearly identical in caliber to~~ the ~~American~~ 76 ~~mm M1, but~~ was ~~a more potent weapon~~.
