History

In 1917 designer John Browning saw the need for a lighter machine gun capable of keeping up with assaulting infantry. The result of his work was the Browning automatic rifle (BAR). The BAR was only officially adopted in US service in the late 1930s. It also had significant overseas sales. Belgium and Poland both produced copies. This meant that the BAR saw action right from the beginning of the Second World War. The BAR gave good service during the war and continued in US service until the late 50s early 60s.
