Used by the French as part of the American Lend Lease plan, the M1a2/M5 was the American 3 inch AA gun that was configured for anti-tank use on both the M10 Tank Destroyer and Sherman 76 mm equipped tanks. It was first mounted on the M1a2 105 mm howitzer carriage when the need to get a bigger AT gun into the action than they had with the British 6 pounder based M1a1/M1, showed its consequences with the new German Tiger tanks. It served well with the United States Army in addition to other Allied nations under lend lease.
