Notes for revision
==Connection==

'''Limit LOD Changes'''
Limited update rate for LOD switching.  Should be enabled by default.

'''Limit FOV Changes'''
LOD switching is only done for objects within the FOV.  Should be enabled by default.

=Accessing the Game Settings=

Follow this path to adjust your game settings.

START->ALL PROGRAMS->Cornered Rat Software->Battleground Europe->settings

This is the main menu for Battleground Europe (BE) Settings.

=Basics of Tuning for Performance=

==Game Sounds==

First you'll need to check for your "Sound card".

You'll want to make sure that your Sound Card is selected instead of "Primary Sound Driver".

This is a major source of problems and lag while running BE.

===Ambient Sounds===

Ambient Sounds are things like chirping birds, barking dogs, rustling leaves, and wind. These are not necessary but add to the overall experience of BE.
''This does affect performace.'' This is even more true if your system has an Intergrated Sound Card. If you experience difficulties in game play or your computer performs poorly in BE you might turn the Ambient Sound option to "Never".

===Sound Options===
This Heading has 2 selections-

3D Sounds - Turn this on when using a surround sound speaker system. The can greatly affect gameplay and performance.
*"Network Route" where you can choose between: Use Best - Primary - Secondary
*"Visable Player Limit" selections being Low - Medium - High

2D Sounds - Select this if you have a stereo or 2 Speaker System.
==Video==

===Maximum sounds===

Maximum Sounds means the total number of sounds heard at any one time. You'll need to know how many sounds your sound card can successfully support.

If the Maximum Sound Setting is incorrect it can cause a Crash to Desktop (CTD) or a host of other problems.

===Video/Network===

You can adjust your Video and Network settings from this menu screen.

==Video Options==

Make Sure your Video Card is selected and not something else. BE runs most efficiently with a properly installed video card.  Make sure to update your drivers often to ensure the highest quality gameplay.

===Resolution===

This is the Resolution that BE will be displayed in.

There are 16 bit (x16) and 32 (x32) bit modes.

The image above is the most common resolution of 1024x768x32 bit.

'''No Lock To Refresh''' (V Sync)

Checking this box allows the frame rate to render higher then the refresh rate of the monitor (60hz,72hz+).

Unchecking the box prevents the computer from rendering above the selected refresh rate.

==Connection==

Always leave this at "Use Best" (Recommended).
Here you can select which Display to use, the Resolution on the Display and if Vertical Syncing is Enabled/Disabled.<br>
Vertical Syncing helps to create stability by synchronizing the image frame rate of the game with your display monitor refresh rate. If it's not synchronized, it can cause screen tearing, an effect that causes the image to look glitched or duplicated horizontally across the screen.

==Special FX==
===Effects===

This lists all Effects that can be Enabled/Disabled to better game performance:

===Show game info===
*Normal Maps
*Post Render Filter
*Water Shaders
*Water Reflections
*Muzzle Flash Lights
*Combat Smoke
*Specular

This shows the chat bar,compass, and other important tools you can use in gameplay. Turning these off can increase overall performance, but not using them when in battle can seriously affect your overall gaming experience.
Radial Clutter - Also you can change the Ground Clutter, its Density and Radius

===Shadow size===
===Shadows===

This displays shadows under objects. However this is not very important and rarely affects gameplay. Turn this off to gain a mild performance boost.
This has one selector "Shadow Presets" which can be Low-Medium-High.

===HUD Visibility===
===Infantry===

This displays Your health & ammo or health, ammo, & compass. Turn on or off to suit your needs. Again can this can affect performance, but rarely with great consequence.
With the Infantry Preferences you can control the following:
*Level of Detail- You can select how detailed Troops are in Third Person view.
*Leave Corpses- Select Enabled/Disabled if you want the dead to leave Corpses.
*Leave Blood- Again Enabled/Disabled to leave Blood Splats.

===Lighting Correction===
Disabling Corpses or Blood Splats may increase Performance but does not help you as a player to read what has transpired during the battle.

This adjusts the color settings for BE. It's best to leave this as is at '''1'''.
Leave Corpses- here you can choose how many Corpses can be seen and the Duration they remain visible in Minutes.

===Supression===
==Sound==

This turns the Special Effects on or off for BE.
Here you can change Audio Preferences.
*Sound Card- You can select which Audio Sound comes out from including Headsets.
*Ambient Sounds- this can be Birds Chirping or Wind. You can select between Frequent/Infrequent/Disable.
*Alerts- you can Enable/Disable a sound that plays everytime an Alert comes in.
*Music- you can Enable/Disable music to play when not in game.

For better performance turn ''Muzzle Smoke'' and ''Tracer Smoke'' off. You'll want to leave ''Muzzle light'' on for night time battles.
Volume Control has two selectors, Sound Effects and Music Volume.

==Visual/Visual Limits==
===Intergrated Voice Comms (IVC)===

IVC Preferences are as follows:
*Speaker- you can select from which Speaker/Headset voice comes out of.
*Microphone- select the device you want to capture voice from.

===Dithering===
Next you have a list of Channels to Enable/Disable:
*Area Voice Comms
*Mission Voice Comms
*Target Voice Comms
*Side Voice Comms
*Lobby Voice Comms
*Squad Voice Comms

This reduces coloring or shading from 32 bit down to 256 colors. This results in a very poor image. This does not result in a major performance increase anymore.
IVC Volume Control has two selectors, Speaker and Microphone Volume.

===Texture Reduction===
==User Interface==

Reduces the amount of textures introduced into the online world. This can be a performance gain.
Here you can change the "FONT SIZE" and Enable/Disable "TOOLTIPS".
It is possible here to change "Icon Color Preferences":
*Friendly Color
*Enemy Color
*Squad Color
*Mission Color
*Mission Leader Color
*New Player Color

===Enable Specular===
"AWS Colors" (Air Warning System) can also changed here:
*Low Color
*High Color
*Opacity (which is controlled by a Slider Bar)

Introduces shine or a glossy effect to tanks, planes, boats and other items in the world. Older video cards may take a large performance decrease with this enabled.
===Chat===

===Visible Player Limit===
You can "RESET TO DEFAULT RADIOS" by clicking the "RESET" Button. This would return all Chat Bars F1-F6 to the following:
*F1 Mission
*F2 Target
*F3 Origin
*F4 Squad
*F5 Ops
*F6 Help

this sets the total amount of players that can be seen at once. This is a Large Performance loss at high. Default is medium.
Enable/Disable "Bad Language Filter" and "Squad Invites".

===Water===
===Heads Up Display (HUD)===

===Enable Shaders===
From here you can Show/Hide your "HUD MODE".<br>
This renders the new water effects for BE. Although this depends on your Graphics card Pixel Shader. The Water effects need Pixel Shader 2.0 or higher.
Choose between Name and Rank/Vehicle Type/None for "ICON MODE"<br>
Enable/Disable "DEATH ICONS"<br>
"RESET HUD" would place all HUD Boxes in their default locations.<br>
"PPO PLACEMENT" would change Color Preferences for Good or Bad Placements.

====HUD Windows====

===Water Reflections===
Here you can Enable/Disable the following HUD Windows:
*Game Info
*Readout
*Orders
*Health Bar
*Primary Ammo
*Secondary Ammo
*Chat
*Mini Map
*Voice Comms

This renders reflective objects in the water. This is/can be the Cause of the "5 second lag spike" Bug. It is also a major performance increase when disabled.
Change HUD TRANSPARENCY for the following:
*HUD Elements
*IVC Box
*Chat Box
*Mini Map

===Post Render Filter===
MINIMAP PREFERENCE- ZOOM from LOWEST to HIGHEST
Enable/Disable "TE INFO"

This is BE's Version of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_rendering HDR] Lighting (High dynamic range)
====HUD Alerts====
Adding Better lighting Effects for BE. Disabled results in a high performance increase for older video cards.

===Grass Shader===
You can Enable/Disable HUD ALERTS
Change "MESSAGE BEHAVIOR" from Automatic Text Display/Display Text on Click.<br>
MESSAGE DISPLAY INTERVAL can be changed on a Sliding Scale in "Seconds".

This introduces a Higher resolution texture for the grass in BE. Turning this off results in a mild Performance increase,it can also help with lag "spike" issues.
====HUD WayPoints====

===Normal Maps===
You can Enable/Disable HUD WayPoints Origin/Targets
You can Enable/Disable HUD WayPoints Rally/Attack/Bomb/Ammo

This turns on/off the new maps for BE. This can be a mild performance increase. Although it is recommended to leave as enabled.
You can Change the "VIEW DISTANCE" of "Ground Missions" (in Meters/Unlimited) and "Air/Naval Missions" (in Kilometers/Unlimited).
