Facing the rapid introduction of the semi-automatic rifles of the United States and the U.S.S.R - the [[M1 Garand]] and the Tokarev SVT-40, respectively - Germany sought out an answer which became the Gewehr 43. It fired the 8x57 mm IS round, which is also used by the Mauser [[Karabiner 98k]].
