Facing the rapid introduction of the semi-automatic rifles of the United States and the U.S.S.R - the M1 Garand and the Tokarev SVT-40, respectively - Germany sought out an answer which became the Gewehr 43. It fired the 8x57 mm IS round, which is also used by the Mauser Karabiner 98k.
More difficult to produce, it was not issued in quantities approaching its rivals but over 400,000 were fielded by the end of the war.
