History
It became apparent to the German armed forced that bolt action rifles were a to become a thing of the past and that a semi-auto rifle would be needed. Two rifles where produced by two of Germany’s major small arms manufactures Walther and Mauser. the Mauser design was introduced in 1941 and at least 12,755 were made, but it proved unreliable in combat. The Walther design fared better in combat but still suffered from reliability problems. Walther worked through this reliability and created the Geweher43(G43). The G43 when into production in 1943 and reached the frontline in that year.
More difficult to produce, it was not issued in quantities approaching its rivals but over 400,000 were fielded by the end of the war.
